Leaving Cert Grinds

Highly Experienced Leaving Cert Grinds Teacher

An experienced grinds teacher trusted by students and parents, Gerald has been providing leaving cert grinds to students in Tullamore, Athlone and surrounds for over 10 years. As a professional educator he has been helping his students achieve excellent results at all grade levels – with an exemplary reputation in leaving cert studies.

In addition to the subject-specific grinds outlined below, Gerald offers Guidance on College Courses, and Guidance on Entry to Medicine (incl. advice on the HPAT) – for those students hoping to enter medicine (please see our Other Services page for more info).

Leaving Cert Maths Grinds

The project maths course is challenging not just for the difficulty of the subject matter but also the length of the course. For example there are topics such as hypothesis testing which were traditionally taught in 3rd level courses and are now on the curriculum. This means teachers in schools are under pressure to complete the course within the two years and so if a student can’t keep up the teacher often doesn’t have time to give the him/her the attention they need.

The notes I give not only explain the topic in a full clear manner which they can refer to afterwards should they need to reinforce their understanding but tips are given in the use of various maths techniques such as the correct application of them, what are their limits and flaws and insights into where students fall down.

As mentioned on the ‘About Us‘ page, study and exam techniques are provided which will also benefit other leaving cert subjects.

Leaving Cert Chemistry Grinds

Chemistry is said to be the science subject which lies between physics and biology in difficulty.

The maths in it can give students a lot of trouble but on the positive side once it is mastered there are no further surprises in the exams, i.e. everything that appears in the exams has been covered in the books. This is unlike physics and maths in which you could still be asked questions which weren’t dealt with in school.

My approach with maths questions is to break the solutions down into a step by step system which has proven extremely successful, even helping 3rd level students. It helped a college student two years ago who had gotten 12% in her 1st year chemistry which she had put down to being extremely weak at maths (a bare pass in ordinary level leaving cert maths). This method was taught to her over the summer and she achieved 68% in her repeat exam. Also provided are tips in what to look out for to prevent mistakes and insights into where students fall down on as well as study and exam techniques which will benefit other leaving cert subjects.

Leaving Cert Biology Grinds

Biology, as the name implies, is the science of life. It is the study of how life in all its forms is made, how it works and how it interacts with other life-forms and the non-living world.

Considered in the past as having no application to the real world it has become the most far reaching of the sciences with branches in medicine, agriculture, conservation, biotechnology, forensics, etc.

The course was revamped a few years ago now with a greater emphasis on biochemistry and biotechnology. This as a result has increased its difficulty as a subject. Topics which cause students problems in understanding amongst others include Genetic Crosses, Photosynthesis, Respiration, DNA/RNA expression and replication, even Diffusion and Osmosis. On teaching these and other topics I will break them down into clear notes which not only explain the subject in a full clear manner (which they can refer to afterwards should they need to reinforce their understanding) but tips are given in what to look out for to prevent mistakes and insights into where students fall down. Study and exam techniques which will benefit other leaving cert subjects are also given.

Leaving Cert Physics Grinds

Physics quite probably is the next most difficult topic after honours maths in the leaving cert system due to its high mathematical content. So unless a student is well versed in the fundamental maths techniques it is hard to do well.

On starting with the student I will assess their knowledge of maths and if necessary will go through any areas that need strengthening (this will also have the further benefit of assisting them in their leaving cert maths). I then go through each topic in physics providing them with clear notes and handouts to which the student can refer long after the session should their understanding need strengthening.

Also provided are tips in what to look out for to prevent mistakes and insights into where students fall down on as well as study and exam techniques which will benefit other leaving cert subjects.

*It should be noted with the monthly rate if a student cannot make their session I will offer an alternative times for that week but if they don’t suit the student forfeits that week’s fee.

**Regarding the small groups if a student cannot make a session they automatically forfeit the fee but notes from the session will be sent to them. It isn’t possible to offer an alternative date as it requires changing the other students. Hence the low fee charged.

Students can either come as a group they have organised themselves, or if not they will be placed according in groups according to their ability. The benefits are threefold: students will often share tips or help each other in any difficulties they may have, it facilitates the possibility for car pooling, and obviously the cost for parents is significantly less.
